Chandy C. John, M.D., M.S., holds the Ryan White Endowed Chair in Pediatric Infectious Diseases and is director of the Ryan White Center for Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Global Health at Indiana University. Dr. John’s research investigates why children develop severe malaria, why they die from severe malaria, and why survivors of severe malaria develop cognitive impairment. Dr. John also studies ways to prevent malaria and other infections in children with sickle cell disease. His research studies are based in Uganda and Kenya, in collaboration with Makerere University and Moi University. He is the author of more than 250 papers, published in journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Nature, Clinical Infectious Diseases, Blood, PLOS Medicine, BMC Medicine, Nature Communications, Neurology and Pediatrics. Dr. John is a member of Fogarty International Center Advisory Board, a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Infectious Diseases, and a member of the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices Polio Working Group. Dr. John served as president of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in 2019 and as co-chair of the Thrasher Research Fund Scientific Advisory Committee from 2020-2023. He received his medical degree and completed his residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at the University of Michigan, and completed his fellowship training in pediatric infectious diseases at Case Western Reserve University.
