Postdoctoral Researcher
Medical College of Wisconsin
Dr. Tarun Pant, Ph.D., is working as a postdoctoral research fellow with the Department of Surgery, Division of Pediatric Surgery, at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He received his doctorate in 2019 from Anna University, Chennai, India. Academically, his research continues to focus on characterizing epigenetic and immunological processes underlying the pathogenesis of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, sickle cell disease, and human neurodegenerative disorders.
In his current position, he is understanding the role of sterile inflammation and its effect on hemorheology and chronic lung injury in murine sickle cell disease. Furthermore, his research utilizes N-acetyl-lysyltyrosylcysteine amide (KYC peptide), a redox-modulating end-capped tripeptide, to enhance RBC morphology, reduce oxidative burden, and alleviate lung vasocongestion.
Dr. Pant's other central area of focus is understanding the genetic and immunological basis of the familial inflammation associated with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) susceptibility, as well as how levels of innate inflammation influence the rate of disease progression. Furthermore, his research involves the use of probiotics to promote immunoregulation and potentially slow the progression of T1D before and at the onset of the disease.
Dr. Pant has published 18 peer-reviewed articles in prestigious journals, including Science Advances, Redox Biology, Free Radical Biology and Medicine, Antioxidants, and Anaesthesia and Analgesia. In addition to his research, he has also been involved in teaching and mentoring students, as well as actively serving on the peer review process of numerous journals, including the Journal of Translation Medicine, Frontiers in Immunology, and Clinical and Translational Medicine. He serves as a review editor in Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine, Section Hypertension.
